Mahieu 2008 Daylily Registrations: ASTRID and HAKUUNZAN

In January 2008 I registered two daylilies that have been grown by Richard Glassford of Utah.  I want to thank Richard for preserving these seedlings for me. In the early 2000s (can't remember which year!) I spoke at a regional AHS conference in Salt Lake. At that time I took some of my most interesting (species x cultivar) crosses for their auction. Two of those seedlings (then under cross #) were bought by Richard, and he has beautifully grown them and hybridized with them since that time. One of the plants has been pivotal in my breeding progam, as I have made over one hundred crosses with it.

When I saw these seedlings on the LilyAuction I contacted Richard, I felt they were so outstanding they deserved names, especially seeing how much they have been used in both of our programs. As garden subjects these plants are superlative, but this is also a great point of "book keeping" with the hybridizer in mind.  In future pedigrees these plants will be listed as ASTRID and HAKUUNZAN not "seedling" or "H hak. X seedling". Those little details are so important to those of us shuffling the genome.

Since these seedlings resulted from crosses made over a decade ago, they did not make the trip to Kentucky, consequently there is no way that David Burris could register/introduce them. So, I registered them and am obtaining divisions for David and I to grow and hybridize with. Rest assured these two plants will get planted in rich Kentucky soil this spring and we will get them increasing for sale at Bluegrass Gardens as soon as possible. I am very grateful that Richard has preserved these plants, they were from my first hybridizing patch and were some of my first (species X cultivar) crosses. It is very thrilling to think of the crosses David and I will be able to make with them this summer. I have been very interested in doing backcrosses to key foundation plants, but that's impossible if you don't have the plants!

Thank you Richard!

Brian

(ORCHID CORSAGE X H. citrina) Mahieu cross: 1995

ASTRID and HAKUUNZAN are officially registered with the AHS, the names were approved on Feb. 8th, 2008.  I have heard that there is another daylily going by the name of  Astrid that is not registered with the AHS.
Here is Richard's picture of ASTRID at right.
ASTRID is THORHALLA's aunt, and has a full sibling that will be registered as well.  Astrid's sibling is below:

Here is Richard's description of HAKUUNZAN which is out of H. hakuunensis. (Hakuunzan is the province in Korea where H. hakuunensis originated): "waxy dark yellow trumpet huge branching and bud count. This seedling has 50+ bud count and is extremely vigorous. Sets pods better than any plant I have ever worked with. The pollen is also exceedingly fertile. It flowers mid to late season and puts on a great show. Some of the middle scapes had 10X branching and 80+ buds. One of the scapes had 118 buds and amazing feat for a daylily. I am using this plant in my UFO breeding program with great success."
