Hemerocallis citrina and nocturnal hybridization:
using H. citrina in a hybridizing program

Brian Mahieu demonstrating nocturnal hybridization techniques with H. citrina.  Beginning in 1995 Mahieu focused his ambitious hybridizing program on this nocturnal species and up to half of his hybridizing was done at night.  Subsequent generations of (H. citrina X cultivar) hybrids display extended blooming: most open for over 24 hours.  The strictly nocturnal anthesis of H. citrina is recessive to the day-blooming (diurnal anthesis) habit.

Up to 70 buds and 8-way branching, extremely fragrant.

F1 H. citrina Seedlings

(ORCHID CORSAGE X H citrina)

This is a classic spider, and the foundation of my citrina lines.  A full sibling to this seedling was the parent of 'Thorhalla' Mahieu '03.  That plant was the only purple in the pod of 7 seeds that resulted from the (ORCHID CORSAGE X H citrina) cross.

General characteristics of F1 citrina seedlings

The picture of the (PURPLE ODDITY X H citrina) siblings illustrates many of the F1 (citrina X cultivar) traits:   Most are nocturnal, many  extended bloomers, many pale lemon trumpets and some light reddish purples.  Also some and lemon and purple bi-colors.  Like citrina, many of the seedlings have great bud counts (30+) and branching (3-5 way) and pronounced fragrance.  Extremely fertile pollen and good pod set if pollinated at dusk.  Great breeding potential for bi-colored Spiders and Unusual Forms!

The below are tetraploid seedlings resulting from crosses of tetraploids with  citrina pollen.  Both seedlings strongly display citrina's tall, branched scapes and have much narrower segments than the pod parents.  It is theorized that citrina produces unreduced gametes that can, thus, combine with the reduced tetraploid gametes producing fully tetraploid progeny. Microscopic examination of citrina pollen reveals many unreduced pollen grains. Both of these seedlings will give pods when pollinated with tet pollen, and vice versa.
