Spatulate Unusual Form with pinching and twisting action in the segments.  Flower form is flat as a dinner plate and  as large as one! A gorgeous violet with a purple blue band on the petals and a ruffled cream picotee on all segments!  This diamond dusted bloom has a chartreuse throat and the petals display a micro-ruffled near bubbly texture -- this trait is prevalent in PURPLE SATELLITE's children.  We are getting many gorgeous CLEAR purples from Purple Satellite.  PS was absolutely the best parent for purple-blue spiders and UFs in the '01 seedling crop!  BELLADONNA STARFISH (a full pod-sibling to TRIUNE BEING) has been a wonderful parent, and many of her children display this knobby edging and lighter picotee -- very uncommon in the Unusual Forms class.  Very fertile pollen, reluctant pod parent, but I did not know it was nocturnal when I was testing it.  Hit it at dusk, and you may ,well, get pods.  Very vigorous grower/clumper though fans are not large.

If you want to breed purple spider/UFs with purple blue eyes this is your parent, I can not stress this enough....

UNUSUAL FORM

This plant is unique in my oeuvre as it is very short!  The color is a very rich bronzy maroon with purplish tones. The name derives from the large watermarked eyezone that is lacquered with a copper-bronze area above the intense lemon to lime throat.  the petals pinch and ruffle lightly and are adorned with a minute gold edge.  substance is a heavy, diamond dusted suede.  Children are super extended bloomers some opening over 3 days!  Easily fertile both ways, full sibling to VENUS OF WILLENDORF

ATTACK LIZARD
40 EM 7.5 inch crispate Unusual Form.  This very striking flower is carried on sturdy scapes with 5 way branching and 30+buds!  The flowers are a warm, dark pink with a rose-purple chevron and matching veining all set off by a very deep green throat that holds all day.  The sepals quill, twist and hook on the ends and the petals are narrow at the base giving openness to the bloom.
D97-382A  (ROSY LIGHTS X WILSON SPIDER)

40 EM 9 inch, quilled sepals and pinched petals make for a wildly expressive Unusual Form.  Very sturdy scapes, 2x12 branching and budcount.  The warm lemon-cream blooms have a  corduroy texture and great substance.  They are the most sculptural blooms in my  garden!  There is a hint of melon to the color and “MO MO” has a pale chartreuse throat and diamond dusting.  Excellent parent of UFOs in melon, pink, red, yellow and with vivid eyes too! Dormant.

Mahieu 2001
JEWEL OF SHINAR  25 E 8 inch spatulate spider variant. Petals 5 x 1.25” 4.0:1 ratio.  B&B 3x12.  I do not hybridize for reds, but certainly couldn’t argue when this beauty opened!  The flower descends from a Wilson seedling that is a waxy pale orange cascade with great substance, and a green throat.  This I crossed with Lambert’s famous “sleeper” EMERALD EYE.  Jewel of Shinar is a wonderful, clear red with blue overtones, a very faint suggestion of a watermark 3/4 of the way out on the petals a smart white midrib and gorgeous deep green throat that lasts all day.  This beauty also throws the occasional 4x4 polytepal bloom.
Fertile both ways SEV.

33 EM 8 inches, a gorgeous ivory cascade Unusual Form, seersucker texture.

Unusual Form with very wide segments and seersucker texture.   This plant makes very large fans and vigorous root systems!   Branching and budcount 2x9  I expect the branching to increase with better culture, as there are many bracts with dormant buds on the scapes, dormant.  Fertile both ways.  Gorgeous seedlings in shades of deep pink and intense coral pink!

These last three cultivars are LOST TO CULTIVATION.
They died in a "propagation" disaster.  I was using the protocols published in the AHS Journal for crown division in conjunction with hydroponics -- with devastating results.  Please don't attempt this!

All existing plants of these cultivars rotted in my hydroponics -- of this I am positive.  I only list them here as they were important parents for me, and they are in the AHS database as registered cultivars.  I have noted in bold existing siblings and progeny of note.  The good news is that I have thousands of seedlings that continue these lines of breeding.

ETHEREAL PRESENCE (Lost to Cultivation)
#MAH-D96-25A
Diploid.  6 inch flower, 28 inch scapes, Mid-Season Bloom, Dormant.

A clear lilac and white bi-color star with a darker halo above a chalky lemon to chartreuse throat.  This flower is truly an ETHEREAL PRESENCE in the garden!  It is the clearest lilac and white daylily I have seen.  These photos were taken at the end of a hot , sunny day and the segments were still crisp and sparkling with diamond-dusting.  The large, pale lemon throat is striking against the deep lilac halo, and the form is always beautifully symmetrical.

(FLUTTERBYE X KATYS BLUE)

This flower was the clearest WHITE and lilac bloom I've ever seen.  It was a wonderful parent and excellent "clarifier".
Parent of VINCENT VAN GOGH
Triune Being
TRIUNE BEING (Lost to Cultivation)
#MAH-D96-14E
Diploid 9 inch flower, 40” sturdy scapes, Early Mid-Season Bloom, Dormant, Nocturnal, extended.

Another-worldly, pale cobalt violet variable crispate  with one-half inch wide
watermarked lavender-blue chevrons on the petals.   Chalky lemon to chartreuse throat which holds all day.  Diamond dusted, extremely fertile pollen, some pods.  The edges of the petals on TRIUNE BEING are micro-ruffled giving the effect of being knobby (see the detail).  The segments  twist, curl, pinch and lightly cascade.  Sometimes the segments display a lighter piccotee.  The flowers open pale cobalt violet, and on hot sunny days lighten to a powdery lavender-blue.  These photos were taken at the end of a hot, sunny day with a 100 degree F heat index!  Light fragrance.
(CERULEAN STAR X LOCH NESS MONSTER)

Excellent parent, yet surpassed in that department by it's full pod sibling BELLADONNA STARFISH.
Velociraptor
VELOCIRAPTOR (Lost to Cultivation)
#MAH-D96-168A
Diploid.  6 inch flower on 30 inch scapes, Early Mid-Season Bloom, Dormant.

A bizarre crispate Unusual Form Daylily with pinched petals and sepals which quill and hook on the ends -- hence the reference to the vicious velociraptors in Jurassic Park!  The color of this flower is a marvelous chocolate-taupe with a huge, blackish-plum eyezone and a deep green throat which holds all day.  In the morning the color is darker, yet like its mother TRAHLYTA, the bloom matures to its smashing chocolate color which makes the splashy eyezone stand out all the more.  Extremely pod and pollen fertile.  Great breeding potential for Unusual Forms.
(TRAHLYTA X RIGAMAROLE)
Full sibling to VENUS OF WILLENDORF and BRAZEN ALTAR
