Guest Hybridizer Patti Waterman

Patti has been hybridizing with several of my cultivars for a number of years.  I look forward to the pictures she will share soon.  In the meantime, I thought it would be useful to show one of her gorgeous seedlings involving "Prague Spring".  PS is a very useful UF parent, and has been used extensively by many—Ned Roberts for one.  When breeding Unusual Forms using full-figured daylilies it is critical to have a flat faced plant to get the bloom to open up.  I have used Cerulean Star extensively for this. Lambert's classic "Prague Spring" is  (PATRICIA WHEELER X CERULEAN STAR).  Here is Patti's seedling and her comments:

Waterman seedling 01-114C

"Last year it bloomed from about 44" to 52", had 5-way  branching (not counting branchlets off of branches) and had an  average bud count of 31, ranging from 23 to 39 blooms per scape.  The  blooms measure 7.25" and the color from this scanned photo appear  fairly accurate on my monitor.  This is still a small clump in my  garden and has been getting a work-out.  It is very fertile both  ways.  I didn't note the bloom season, but this picture were taken  6/30/06 and blooming continued for a very long time, well into early  September."

Below I illustrate a cultivar of mine that was created using a similar method, and types of bloodlines.  As I said above:  When breeding Unusual Forms using full-figured daylilies it is critical to have a flat faced plant to get the bloom to open up.  I have used Cerulean Star extensively for this.  Patti used Prague Spring for her seedling 01-114C;  Prague Spring is  (PATRICIA WHEELER X CERULEAN STAR).  SENECA MAIDEN, Mahieu '01 is (CLAIRVOYANT LADY X BELLADONNA STARFISH).  Extended parentage would be:  [CLAIRVOYANT LADY X (LOCH NESS MONSTER x CERULEAN STAR)].
Patti used a full-figured southern daylily (Little Print) for the blue-purple eyezone.  I used Clairvoyant Lady, which goes back to Unique Purple.  I believe that Ra Hansen used Unique Purple for the purple eyezone and pulled that through to Clairvoyant Lady.  (So many times in the Unusual Forms bloodlines all lines lead back to Frank Childs and John Lambert!)  Then—to open up the form and introduce crispation, Patti used PRAGUE SPRING, a child of CERULEAN STAR.  I used the latter.  The results Patti and I got are similar, though she achieved more crispation. I hope that her beautiful seedling will be named and introduced!

It is useful to note that eyes are a very dominant trait in Lambert daylilies—even when they are phenotypically a "self" with no apparent eye present—as in the case of PRAGUE SPRING.

Named for my mentor Rosemary Whitacre who is of Seneca and Belgian descent.
This stunning pink lavender spatulate with darker veining and a smashing blue violet eyezone on all segments, dark green throat.  This flower has it all: excellent substance, fragrance, rebloom, easily fertile both ways.  I have never seen ANYTHING remotely like it!  Amazing garden presence, strong scapes and vigorous grower too!  MAH-D98-472M
