My floral paintings are always painted from fresh flowers -- either plein air in the garden or arranged in my studio. I love flowers and the possibilities they offer the artist for juxtaposition of any range of spectral hues. My paintings of flowers usually start with more subdued tonal layers getting the "drawing" established then as I finish I create interlocking abstract shapes of thickly applied pigments. Up-close these paintings are Abstract Expressionism, they are primarily an arrangement of different pigments on a flat surface. The brushmarks and spectral hues exert themselves and create a tension with the image they suggest. This tension is central to my work and symbolic of the tension of the human existence: spiritual vs physical.
