In the fall of 2007 we registered many new plants in my Viking Series, launched a new Egyptian Series, as well as a Space Series. There are new additions to my Volcano, Hawaiian and Snake Series and blooms that range in size from 4 to 11 inches with scape heights up to 78 inches! Many of these new registrations are Unusual Forms, some are Spiders and there are some that are single, large flowers that fit no class – just what Rosemary Whitacre called "long-petaled lilies". The latter are from spider/unusual forms lines and will be useful breeding stock for these forms. Of the 40 registrations, 38 are nocturnal extended bloomers, most open for at least 24 hours. H. citrina (pictured at right) is the matriarch of these lines. I am very excited to finally have F2 and F3 seedlings out of H. citrina ready to release to gardeners. (see MARAMA, ORCHID CONVERGENCE, STEWART PEDEN SMITH, SVENSKA, THORHALL THE HUNTER and RÖGNVALDURSSON to name a few).

Plant stats (especially buds and branching) do not reflect genetic potential. The 2007 growing season was marred by a severe late-April freeze, and record-setting heat and drought in Kentucky. After the warmest March on record (average daytime temperature of 82 degrees F) there was a severe late April freeze with 4 nights below 20 degrees F and one night at 13 degrees. The fans were frozen up to an inch below the surface. Severe drought and heat followed with 21 days over 100 degrees F, and one day of 113 degrees. There was no rain from May 14 to July 2 and David withheld water to test these plants for drought tolerance. Developed in the climatically volatile Midwest, (USDA zone 5-b, -10 to -15 F, -23.4 to -26.1 C) these daylilies display unique form as well a gardenability unusual in many of today's introductions. We are confident these plants can withstand severe Midwestern weather, and with escalating climate change this hardiness is increasingly critical.

All are diploid except there is one tetraploid** introduction from very rare bloodlines: EVENT HORIZON. Also represented here are a number of plants that will cross with both diploids and tetraploids via unreduced gametes* APOPHIS to name one. These plants are exciting bridges between the diploid Spider/UF gene pool and the tetraploid genepool. Most are fertile both ways, all fertile one way or the other as noted. Some daylilies (especially diploids) make genetically small fans. For those used to seeing tetraploids as big as one's wrist this can be shocking. Genetically small fans are no indication of a weak plant. We have noted the cultivars below that produce genetically small fans.

	2009 Introductions
	ANGRBODA 68, M, 5.5, 4X32, EXT, DOR Named for a frost giantess known as the mother of monsters in Norse legend. ‘Angrboda’ is a 68 inch tall, icy lemon white blend with a very intense green throat that holds all day. The green color extends into bisected lemon yellow rays 3/4 of the way out on petals. Form is a semi-open trumpet with slightly spatulate petals, creped texture to blooms. Pod fertile only, bud builder. Pod parent is a fuchsia pink sibling to ‘Seneca Maiden’ and Pollen parent is ‘Olaf The Conqueror’ or a sibling. [(CLAIRVOYANT LADY X BELLADONNA STARFISH) X (CAROLICOLOSSAL X LOLA BRANHAM)] 4 way branching and 32 buds, Diurnal.
	KOOKABURRA 60, M, 6, 5X38, NOC, EXT, FR, DOR KOOKABURRA is a pinkish-mauve and taupe blend bitone with a faint violet halo band above a neon chartreuse throat. The blooms are extremely triangular in presentation with pinched petals and twisted, slightly quilled sepals. 60 inches tall with widely-spaced 5 way branching and an extreme bud builder, blooming until frost in ‘08. ‘Kookaburra’s’ parentage involves the rare (in the modern gene pool) species H. hakuunensis which is an excellent parent for bud builders with high budcounts and impressive branching. Other cultivars in ‘Kookaburra’s’ pedigree are excellent parents for clear purple Unusual Forms. Pollen fertile, we believe it is pod fertile. 	LAVA SPRAY 40, M, 2.5, 6X50, FR, DOR Six-way branching and a bud count of 50 set this little powerhouse apart. 2.5 inch trumpets of medium cadmium orange are radically pod and pollen fertile and lightly fragrant. {[(H. thunbergii X SILOAM HAROLD FLICKINGER) X (STELLA DE ORO X FLOWER FIESTA)] X Seedling}
	MANTICORE 50, M, 8.5, 5X34 DOR Named for a mythological, sphinx-like creature said to inhabit Indian jungles. ‘Manticore’ makes a huge impact in the garden displaying its 8.5 inch flowers on 50 inch tall scapes. The twisting cascade blooms are a gorgeous polychrome of violet, lavender, and purple with a mascara edged watermark on the petals and lighter picotee. ‘Manticore’ is related to ‘Apophis’ through a Lambert seedling in the pollen parent. 	PINK IBIS 28, EM, 7, 3X22, FR, DOR PINK IBIS is the latest in the tropical bird series. The showy blooms are a bitone of medium pinkish coral, with a very faint lavender halo on the petals and an intense lemon lime throat. Light fragrance. Soft, faint ruffling on all segments. Fertile both ways, 4x4 polytepal 25% {(TRAHLYTA X RIGAMAROLE) X [GREEN TARANTULA X (H. f. rosea X FELLOW)]} 3 way branching and 22 buds
	SWAN MAIDEN 44, ML, 8, 3X24, NOC, FR, DOR SWAN MAIDEN is a beautiful voluptuous cascade in glittering mother of pearl white with a faint coral-pink blush at the midrib, the veins are very white and substance is suede-like. The coral pink blush at the midrib is a classic indicator of a genetic melon from which all colors are possible especially pinks, purples, melons and in this case whites. Parentage was lost in a move, but may involve CLOUD FOREST, RADIANT MOONBEAM and MAVIS SMITH. Fertile both ways, though reluctant pod parent. Was pod fertile with PURPLE SATELLITE. 3 way branching and 24 buds. Nocturnal, Fragrant.
	VALKYRIES FLIGHT 54, M, 10, 4X24, NOC, EXT, DOR VALKYRIES FLIGHT is the first introduction out of ‘Thorhalla’ Mahieu ‘03. Another tall addition to the viking series with huge 10 inch blooms displayed on 54 inch scapes, ‘Valkyries’ Flight’ is a stunning spatulate Unusual Form in a smoky violet hue with a fuchsia-red overtone. A nocturnal extended bloomer and easily fertile both ways. ‘Valkyries’ Flight’ is also related to ‘Apophis’ through a Lambert seedling in the pollen parent. 	WAILUKU 54, M, 7.5, 4X24, FR, EV WAILUKU is the most recent addition to the Hawaiian Volcano Series. A fragrant polychrome of peach, pink and yellow, ‘Wailuku’ is a hardy evergreen displaying its huge tropical-looking blooms on 54 inch scapes. The floral form is a lightly cascading spatulate. Pollen parent is a seedling from a cross Mahieu's son made at age two and a half. Fertile both ways. [(SATIN BIRD x CASHMERE) X (DARLING RIVER x OKLAHOMA KICKING BIRD)] 4 way branching and 24 buds. Fragrant.
	2008 Introductions
	*MB-1 APOPHIS 42 M INSTANT REBLOOM, 7.5, 4X26, NOC EXT, DOR. PINCHED CRISPATE UF purple black with velvety black halo chartreuse throat. Superlative in every way, very consistent form. This is one of the most fertile plants David and I have ever seen. Radically fertile both ways with diploids, and will set pods on tetraploids. Microscopic examination of pollen shows both diploid and tetraploid pollen indicating unreduced gametes. Set pods on these tets: 'Outrageous Fortune" some of John Kinnebrew's 'Spacecoast' series and Laura Burris's tetraploid seedlings. more information on my black and brown daylilies here. 	MB-2 MARAMA 42 ML, 10, 5X24, NOC, EXT, FR, DOR. CASCADE UF huge tropical coral-rose blend with orange sherbet throat. Named for a character in James Michener’s novel Hawaii, also the Polynesian goddess of the moon. In Michener’s novel Marama was the priestess who brought the first flowers to Hawaii from Bora Bora. This gorgeous flower was one of my favorite breeders in this palette in '07, a great addition to my Hawaiian lines and stunning F2 seedling out of H. citrina. Please look at clump pic. 'Tylwyth Teg' was one of Rosemary Whitacre's favorite breeding plants she told me I could get all colors out of her and to "use it". I did. more information on my citrina lines here. 	MB-3 HOODED COBRA 28 EM INSTANT REBLOOM, 5.5, 3X16, 60% 4X4 POLYTEPAL, NOC EXT, NFR, DOR. PINCHED CRISPATE UF irridescent brown with black eye and gold to green throat. Brown daylilies are a combination of fulvous orange pigments with purple and blue pigments (actually I think that just about every daylily pigment is in there). The purples (anthocyanin- based hues) have a tendency to be temperature sensitive, and if they are, the purple of a brown bloom may fade leaving a more brownish hue. Please look at the polytepal pic of 'Hooded Cobra', this was taken in a shady garden setting and shows the deeper chocolate colors that will mature to lighter brown in full sun or heat. 	MB-4 BORA BORA 32 EM 6.5, 3X16, NOC EXT, NFR, DOR, CASCADE UF coral pink, mango and cadmium yellow polychrome with huge kiwi throat. pollen fertile only. This is a gorgeous explosion of tropical colors and great bloodlines for future Spider/UFs in this palette; fuchsia, cream, pinks, corals and shades of tropical yellow should be possible. 	MB-5 ORCHID CONVERGENCE 40 EM 8.5, 4X20, NOC EXT, FR, DOR, CASCADE UF A breakthrough illustrating Mahieu’s quintessential “cattleya cascade" form which is characterized by a ruffled spatulate bloom that cascades softly. lilac and creamy lemon brushed lilac bitone with huge creamy chartreuse throat and pale lavender-blue halo. excellent bloodlines for further development of this extremely rare form. more information on my citrina lines here. 	MB-6 CLAUDE MONET 36 M 7, 3X18, NOC EXT FR DOR CASCADE UF intensely saturated purple-violet bitone with a huge blue purple band and creamy lemon to green throat, thin white-lavender wire picotee on all segments. pollen fertile only. I was saving this name for my most saturated purple to-date, that is a tie with NEFERTARI, and I liked this form better for CLAUDE MONET. Excellent bloodlines for killer Spider/UFs in clear purple-blue and lavender colors. PURPLE SATELLITE is a proven parent for narrow UFs with purple-blue eyes, which are much more rare in the spider/UF class (maroon eyes are dominant). The chevron-shaped blue band comes 3/4 of the way out the petals and is webbed and edged darker, please see PIC #2 and PIC #3DETAIL. Stunning flower! 	MB-7 AMY MACK 42 M 8, 3X18, NOC EXT FR DOR, SPAT UF gorgeous rainbow polychrome of creamy melon pink with a lavender overlay and huge creamy lemon watermark, bitone. I feel this flower is a breakthrough into a new class of UFs along with ORCHID CONVERGENCE. The intensely orchid-like shape of the cascading spatulate is becoming a breeder's hallmark for me. Named for my dear friend and adopted sister, artist Amy Mack. 	MB-8 RÖGNVALDURSSON 78 ML 8.5, 5X30, NOC EXT NFR DOR, CASCADE UF This huge splashy purple with a deeper chevron band is a budbuilder, maturing at 78”, the tallest purple daylily known to the hybridizer. Beautifully spaced branching, saturated color great presence. An F3 plant from H citrina. More information on the tall viking series plants here. The pod parent 'Rögnvaldur' has powerful genes for height, as the pollen parent was only a 4 inch flower on 22 inch scapes! The whole cross was very tall. 	MB-9 MAVIS GWENDOLYN CARTER 50 ML 10.5, 5X24 NOC EXT DOR, CASCADE UF huge glittering polychrome of pink, lavender and lemon cream with creamy chartreuse throat. glittering microfringe on petals. This flower is named for the woman who introduced me to daylilies: Mavis (née Carter) Smith. I also named a daylily to honor her husband Stewart this year. The pod parent of MGC is ‘Rosella Flight’ Mahieu ‘03 or a sibling: this is a great example of a very modern form coming from “simple” or “old-fashioned” flowers. 	MB-10 STEWART PEDEN SMITH 44 E 7.5, 3X20 NOC EXT DOR CASCADE UF unique, icy cream-chartreuse and white blend huge creamy lemon to apple green throat. pollen fertile only. Stewart is my surrogate father, he selected this flower as his namesake, I am happy that it involves H. citrina. more information on my citrina lines here. This is one of the most sought after plants of the '08 intros with the quintessential Mahieu form and coloration. Coming out of 'Triune Being' /'Belladonna Starfish' lines in the pollen. 	MB-12 OLAF THE CONQUEROR 70 M 10, 3X18 NOC EXT FR hardy EV CASCADE UF diamond dusted suede blooms of creamy lemon, chartreuse and greenish white with kiwi throat. commanding garden presence. My only evergreen introduction ever. I cull ruthlessly in early spring for winter damaged foliage. 'Olaf' survived years of this treatment, and I was surprized to learn he is fully evergreen. This would be a good candidate for those in the South who want to grow my plants. OLAF is a great parent, and was probably the pollen parent of NOORLAND though the tag was lost. 	**MB-17 EVENT HORIZON (TET [embryo conversion X TET]) 48 EM 8.5, 4X24 NOC EXT DOR SPAT UF deep, velvety purple black with an intense fuchsia glow, chalky purple chevron band above an orange sherbet to apricot throat. patrician and unique heritage. Easily Fertile both ways bringing new blood into the tet genepool. VELOCIRAPTOR was lost to cultivation and is exceedingly rare in the genepool, so I am thrilled that EVENT HORIZON continues this line. [(DARK GIFT x VELOCIRAPTOR) X SERGE RIGAUD]
	MB-18 PRIMROSE MOTH 24 EM instant and regular REBLOOM 4, 4X22 NOC EXT DOR SPAT UF named for a moth with identical coloration: light cream-peach with primrose pink-lavender eye and a lemon-lime throat. one of my few small and short flowers. Flower substance is suede-like and this little plant is very fetching in the garden. If you are breeding small Unusual Forms this is a great candidate, though it will throw big forms as well. 	*MB-19 EDGE OF CHAOS 36 M 7, 4X22 NOC EXT SEV CASCADE UF purple with huge chalky lemon-white watermark that is mascara edged. pollen parent is a Lonnie Ward seedling, this flower recovers some of the patterns of the small Salter lines on a large Unusual Form. Will cross with both diploids and tetraploids, this trait led to the cultivar's name. Easily pod fertile with tetraploids pollen fertile with tetraploids: 'Darla Anita' , 'Great White', 'Mask Of Eternity' [(CERULEAN STAR x LOCH NESS MONSTER) X {(Fairy Tale Pink x Donetha Marie) x Enchanter’s Spell}] [ploidy of parents: embryo conversions] pollen appears to be diploid but this plant behaves as a tet. though registered as a diploid.

Pollen parent was an intensely "Munson-style" lemon watermarked purple. OTHER WORLDS is showing the ghost of this pattern, it could be intensified in the next generation. 	MB-27 LOST GARDENS 40 M 6, 3X14 NOC EXT DOR CRISPATE UF silvery lilac and pale lemon cream brushed lilac bitone with grey-blue penciled watermark. This is a haunting flower and one of my favorites of the '07 bloom season. The colors are very clear and sparkling. 	MB-29 SVENSKA 50 E 5, 5X48 NOC EXT FR DOR long-petaled form. Beautifully branched and floriferous creamy lemon and chartreuse self, haunting garden presence. Amazing buds and branching in such a terrible growing season, this points to the hybrid vigor resulting from a double dose of H citrina in the pedigree. Another of my favorites from the last few years, this plant is the antithesis of current breeding trends for ever more rococo flowers – providing a nice respot for the eyes. The viking series of plants were designed to be used in mixed herbaceous borders, to stand out in height and presence as specimen plants, yet blending with other plant material. sterile pollen, very pod fertile. 	MB-31 PROTOSTAR 40 M 6, 3X20 NOC EXT FR SEV long-petaled form. singing purple black with blackish halo and sheen, lemon-chartreuse throat. unique bloodlines including rare 'Katys Blue' and 'Emerald Eye' plus the matriarch of my citrina lines. This was one of my favorite plants in 2007, I think the pollen parent could be OLAF THE CONQUEROR, but the tag was lost. This is a tall, in-your-face orchid like plant, riveting garden presence. 	MB-37 ORCHID CANOPY 36 M 6, 5X22 NOC EXT VFR DOR long-petaled form, striking deep violet-lavender and cream bicolor with creamy lemon to kiwi throat. excellent breeding stock for spiders or Unusual Forms and the bicolor trait. The pod parent was a beautiful purple and lemon cascade much admired by Pat Stamile. This flower has a double dose of the bicolor gene(s). H. citrina is a key carrier of this trait.
