Mahieu's Biography Page
In 1987 Mahieu traveled to Paris, France and lived in the Latin Quarter for one month.  During that time he was able to see the great impressionist masterpieces, and to visit "the shrine" -- Monet's home and garden in Giverny.  Upon his return from France, Mahieu devoted himself to painting exclusively en plein air --  outside, directly from nature.

OTHERNESS

12 x 36 inches, plein air mixed media on Belgian linen and panel:
Lascaux acrylics, pastels and aquathane varnish.

This is one of my quintessential twilight pieces of the river bottoms.  When the ambient air temperature is barely freezing and the snow seems to vaporize, the entire landscape becomes a transcendent state: neither physical nor spiritual but somewhere in between.  “OTHERNESS”.  This, to me is a symbol of the human experience on planet earth.  In my artwork, trees have always symbolized humanity’s position/plight -- rooted in the earth but reaching heavenward.
